Steps to achieving certification and provincial examination

Student enrolments:

Any person desiring to become a cosmetologist (student) must make application to the Executive Director prior to commencement date. Students must be pre-approved prior to accumulating hours of training.

A student shall have completed grade12 with diploma and be 18 years of age at the completion of their training.  Mature students must be 21 years of age and have no less than grade 10 education with proof. 

Upon approval from the Executive Director the student may commence training. All students must be registered with the Association.

All training must take place under the direct supervision of licensed instructor in licensed school.  Student capacity is 18 per instructor. All instructors must hold a valid certified instructor license at a Level I, upgraded instructors hold a Level II license. Hours achieved under an instructor who is not valid will not be accepted.

Students will be asked to sign a contract with the school prior to the commencement of training. 

All schools must register each student and payment of fees must be submitted 30 days after enrollment.

Students must complete the prescribed number of clients required.

Student registrations are valid for one year; however, an extension can be given for one additional year to complete training.  If a student has not completed said hours within the two years, they must make application to the Examining & Licensing Committee for approval.

Hours for Hairstyling:

Must complete no less than 1600 hours in no less than 43 weeks in a licensed school under the direct supervision of a certified hairstyling instructor.


At the discretion of the school, students must complete 120 hours to 250 hours of work experience. It must be completed in a licensed salon under the direct supervision of a licensed certified hairstylist. Hours will not be credited if achieved in an invalid salon and certified hairstylist.

Students cannot work on clients prior to achieving 160 hours of training.

After completing 300 hours of training a student may apply for an assistant license and be employed as an assistant during the course of their training. Students cannot be employed in a salon until they have successfully completed 1600 hours of training and received a diploma from the school.

Students will be granted 50 hours of lab time.  This time is to be used for students to attend trade shows, have guest speakers attend school while the instructor is out, substitute teacher; library visit; industry related seminars and will be at the discretion of the school.

All students are required to be examined by the Cosmetology Association of New Brunswick, and upon successfully passing the provincial examination, may receive a certified hairstylist license.
